How to Add an Item
Detailed instructions on how to participate in the Yulem community by displaying your own objects.
Introduction
Yulem.com is all about community participation. Its reason for being is to allow everyone to share their special finds. You are encouraged to add your own objects of interest.
Preparation
Before you try to add your own object to the site you should have the following things prepared and ready.
- Before you can do anything you must register at Yulem.com. This
creates the space to contain your objects and authorizes you to add
objects.
- You must have high quality digital photos of your objects. There
is a separate How To explaining the best way to photograph your
objects. Remember, the bigger they are the slower they load.
- Think about how to describe your object with words. It is not a requirement but strongly encouraged.
- You are encouraged to organize you photos in a single directory on your
local PC. It just makes your life easier.
How to Add Your Own Yulem Objects
- Go to www.yulem.com and login. You will by default be at the "home" page. (Obviously this line is here if you happen to have a hard-copy of this document ;-)
- Observe the navigation links at the upper-left of the page under the site logo. Notice it contains your "My Folder." (Your name will most likely not be Wilma or Fred Flintstone! Also, the site changes more frequently than these documents do so colors and images might be different from these examples.) It looks something like this:
- Select the "My Folder" link to navigate into your personal folder where you will keep your object images.
- Observe a folder similiar to the one below.

- The first time you visit your folder it will be empty (like Fred's above) so you will need to create sub-folders to contain your objects.
- To create a sub-folder select the "Add Item" menu tab in the upper right corner of your My Folder screen and select the menu option "Folder."
- The Add/Edit form should look similar to this screen:
- Provide the information requested by following the on-form instructions. Be sure to save your work by clicking the "Save" button at the bottom of the page. Ignore all the tabs at the top of the form for now.
- In this example we created a "Paper" folder for our paper objects.
- After clicking the Save button observe a screen similar to the one below:
- You are now inside your newly created folder that you named "Paper" in the above example.
- (If you wanted to return to your My Folder you could select the "Up one level" link but don't do that just yet.)
- Next, add your photograph of the paper object.
- Notice that there is the "Add item" tab just like the preceding screen. Select it to reveal a list of items that you can add to this folder. Choose "Image" since that is the type of item that will contain your photograph and its description. After you have done so you will see something similar to the following.
- Enter the title of your image. Be succinct but descriptive.
- Next enter the Description of your object. There are some very important points to observe if you want your image to be properly displayed.
- You MUST include in your description at least one of the following key words so that it will be found and displayed.
- Glass
- Metal
- Paper
- Plastic
- Stone or rock
- Wood
- InSitu (i.e. objects that cannot be moved)
- Other
- Try to include the following characteristics in your description:
- Where it was found
- Circumstances of the discovery
- Size (WxHxD) and weight, if appropriate
- Any other characteristic not revealed by the photograph. Normally you want to avoid wasting time and space describing what can be seen in the photograph.
- Upload a quality photograph. Read "How to Photograph Your Objects"
- Ignore the "Releated Items" options.
- Indicate your "Discussion" preference. The default is to allow a discussion of your object.
- Be certain to SAVE your image item.
- If all went well you have just added your first yulem object to www.yulem.com. Congratulations!
